Inglewood Criminal Defense, Business Law & Personal Injury Attorney
Inglewood is a southern California city located just west of the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles County. It will soon be the home to both the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers NFL teams with the construction of the Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park underway and slated for completion in 2019.
Early History
Prior to white settlement, Inglewood was the home to several native American tribes who enjoyed the natural hot springs still preserved in today’s Edward Vincent Jr. Park. Settlers came to the area in the 1780s as ranchers were ordered to graze their cattle on the ocean side of Los Angeles to leave the missions located there undisturbed. In 1834 rancher Ygnacio Machado built a structure known as the Centinela Adobe, or the sentinel’s home, up on the hill as an ideal place to watch over his herd. The structure still stands today and is a protected national monument. The city was officially incorporate in 1908.
Notable Spots in History
Aside from the hot springs and Centinela Adobe, Inglewood has been known for several other interesting pieces of history. In 1905 the Inglewood Park Cemetery was built and used for the entire region. Countless historical figures and celebrities are interred there, including Caesar salad creator Caesar Cardini; supercentenarian Gertrude Baines (1894-2009); singer Ella Fitzgerald; singer Etta James; celebrity attorney Robert Kardashian; and World Champion boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, to name a few.
Inglewood was home to one of the premier American horse racing tracks, Hollywood Park Racetrack, until its closure in 2013. It was also the birth site of soft serve ice cream for Californians, as the owner owned the western development rights of Dairy Queen in the 1940s. The city was dubbed an official All-America City by the National Civic League in 1989 and again in 2009.
